How to Calculate Grades
Grades can usually be calculated with points, percentages or weighted categories. The exact method depends on how your teacher, school or university measures performance.
Percentage grade formula
Use: earned points divided by total possible points multiplied by 100. Example: 36 out of 40 = 36 ÷ 40 × 100 = 90%.
Weighted grade formula
Weighted grades are used when parts of a course count differently. Multiply each score by its weight, add the results, then divide by total weight.
Final exam grade formula
To calculate the score needed on a final, use your current grade, desired grade and the final exam weight. The calculator on this site does the equation for you.
Tips for accurate results
Use the official syllabus, include all assessed work, check whether extra credit is allowed and confirm the official grading scale before making academic decisions.
